Liu Shichang’s comments on the Healing Powers of Yin Style Baguazhang
Transcribed by Rand Cardwell
The following is a statement from Liu Shichang, a 4th generation practitioner of Yin Style Baguazhang. He was born in 1928 and has studied YSB continuously since 1958, when he had a chance meeting with Dr. Xie Peiqi. Mr. Liu has a tremendous amount of knowledge concerning Yin Style Baguazhang and we hope to include future articles on his perceptions and experiences in this art. The following comments are concerned with the health aspects of YSB.
Liu Shichang: When I was sixty-four and I suddenly couldn’t lift my right arm. According to medical doctors, I had hemiplegia and they gave me medicine that I did not take. A student of mine, who also practices Chinese medicine, said the best way was to push the blockage of qi. I thus chose to use the dragon posture, but as I could not lift my arm, I would rest it on my wife’s shoulder and turn around her. After a bit more than a month, the arm was completely recovered. Less than ten years ago I developed diabetes. The doctors again gave me medicine that I did not take. For me, I only believe in one kind of medicine; practice. I make sure that I train everyday and to this day I do not take any medications. In 2003, I had a CT scan, in which they found a clot in the left side of my brain. I am supposed to be paralyzed from it. Well, it has been three years and I’m still turning bagua. What can I say, to this day I don’t believe in medicines. I only believe in practicing every day.
