SHOCKING PALM

Dr. Xie Peiqi’s comments on the YSB Qian/Lion System Shocking Palm

Transcribed by Rand Cardwell

Note: This article is provided to YSB students in an effort to promote a greater understanding of the Shocking Palm of the YSB Lion System. This is a transcription of the YSB Lion System DVD series available through the Association of Traditional Studies. Any errors are my own.

The late Dr. Xie PeiqiDr. Xie Peiqi: There is an old expression, “Words should not leave their area of expertise. The mind should not stray from its person.” I have already talked about the Sweeping, Smashing, Chopping, and Hooking strikes. Ahead of us, we have Shocking, Blocking, Seizing and Grasping. This is also a reflection of bagua’s yin and yang.

Shocking is the first of the last four strikes and is the yang within the yin. Everyone knows about thunder. Shocking should be like thunder. Looking at how thunder is represented in the trigrams, you should understand its yin and yang make-up. The Qian trigram is three yang with no yin, but when you move to Qian san Kan, that is no longer the case. There is one yang in the middle of two yin.

Moving to the Zhen trigram, which is represented by thunder, the yang is at the

bottom with two yin above. Why? Because shocking power has yang qi pushing yin qi. Yin qi represents substances. Yang qi represents movement and that represents the heavy, solid power of shocking.

It doesn’t show its ferociousness on the exterior. Its bold power is internal. It has a second force, a very powerful second force. You might see this force in a factory of big machines, such as a compactor. It has continued power as it compacts what is inside, reflecting a very powerful, heavy force within it. Or more common to us and in the natural world, is thunder. After a clap of thunder, the rolling of its sound continues to shake and show its power. Whether it is a single hand shocking strike or double hand; be it moving with the force, turning the back, or lifting and holding, all of it must be like thunder. As shocking is like thunder.

Shocking is also like the previous strikes I have discussed, which is that it can create an opening, disperse an attack, enter, advance, seize and grasp, or break a grip. All of them are possible with shocking, but it is also its own special personality.

Here, He Jinbao and I will demonstrate some shocking strikes. He comes to attack me, I can shock defend and then shock strike. That is shocking with entering. In shocking to open, if He Jinbao grabs me, I can shock open his grip. If I want to shock and then seize him, whether he strikes me or I strike him. I shock and then seize using a shock force to break his arm. Shocking must contain the abilities to open, enter, disperse, seize, grasp, trap and block.

If he was to strike towards my middle, I could shock strike to block. If I wanted to strike him, I also shock strike. Why? Because I use the shock to disperse the strength and force in his hands and then strike him. This way he has no ability to return the attack. Is that clear?

Another example would be a quick shock to break his grip. He grips and I shock it open. This requires it to contain explosive power, to be hard and solid.

Students should seriously and earnestly explore and research shocking power.
